Death, friends, and family

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Today Berni and I attended a funeral/memorial for a close cousin of hers. No one likes to lose a friend or loved one, but the reality is, we all die someday and these gatherings are inevitable. I have not known Berni’s family for very long, but it was enjoyable seeing a few even under the sad circumstance. Throughout the memorial, I watched, listened and came to a decision about my day of passing.
I do not want a “traditional” funeral where everyone sits around, listens to Psalms 23:4 for the umpteenth time and cry their eyes dry. I have instructed Berni that when I die, she is to rent a hall and have fellowship with friends and loved ones. Treat it like we do at wedding receptions. Serve all of my favorite foods, have good music, and most of all. Enjoy the time with each other. I do not want any sermon about death and dying. I am not trying to be sacrilegious. I simply prefer that people enjoy this time to reminisce and have a good time with each other.
I saw a lot of smiling faces and laughter today at this memorial. That is how life and death should be celibrated.

Welcome to my new blog pages.

Back when my wife Berni and I were traveling the US in our motor home, we maintained a travel blog. Towards the end of 2007 we came off the road and settled back in Muskegon, Michigan. The place I was born and raised.

I stopped blogging at the time to take care of other activities, but it is time to start again.

This past weekend Berni and I visited our good friiends (and Berni’s cousin) Nick and Terry Russell. Nick is the creator and publisher of the Gypsy Journal, an RV travel newspaper. If you are not familiar with Nick or the Gypsy Journal, by all means go to his web site. He has lots of neat things there.

This is a short post as we are tired from riding most the afternoon, and it is a test of my new blog tool.

Come back soon.
